Abstract

A compra clandestina de animais silvestres no Brasil, particularmente de quelônios é uma triste realidade. Considerando as pessoas que compõem esse universo do tráfico, quem comercializa o animal não está interessado na saúde ou bem-estar do animal, apenas no benefício financeiro e no hábito cultural em ter esses animais em domicílio. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar o número de quelônios recebidos pelo Zoológico Municipal de Volta Redonda no período de 2016 a 2021, oriundos de doação ou apreensões, identificando as principais espécies, condições de saúde e origem ilegal, bem como confirmar a cultura da população local em adquirir os animais e descartá-los por doação, tornando evidente o papel das pessoas no contexto de fomentar o mercado ilegal. Neste período foram recebidos 169 animais, de seis espécies terrestres e de água doce, a maioria de doação voluntária. Nessa perspectiva, o trabalho forneceu dados coerentes para o confronto com a prática de possuir quelônios como mascotes pela população na cidade de Volta Redonda.

Abstract

The clandestine purchase of wild animals in Brazil, particularly turtles, is a sad reality. Considering the people who make up this trafficking universe, those who sell the animal are not interested in the health or well-being of the animal, only in the financial benefit and in the cultural habit of having these animals at home. The objective of this study was to quantify the number of turtles received by the Volta Redonda Municipal Zoo in the period from 2016 to 2021, from donation or seizures, identifying the main species, health conditions and illegal origin, as well as confirming the culture of the local population. in acquiring the animals and discarding them by donation, making evident the role of people in the context of promoting the illegal market. During this period, 169 animals were received, from six terrestrial and freshwater species, most of them from voluntary donations. In this perspective, the work provided coherent data for the confrontation with the practice of possessing chelonians as mascots by the population in the city of Volta Redonda.
