PERCEPÇÃO DE MÉDICOS SOBRE ALTERNATIVAS À TRANSFUSÃO SANGUÍNEA EM PACIENTES TESTEMUNHAS DE JEOVÁ
Abstract
The refusal of blood transfusions by Jehovah's Witness patients poses ethical, legal, and clinical challenges to contemporary medical practice, especially in contexts of urgency and risk of death. This study aimed to analyze the level of knowledge and ethical perception of physicians regarding alternatives to blood transfusion, as well as respect for the autonomy of these patients This is a field research study with a qualitative approach, supported by quantitative data, conducted through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire. Closed questions were analyzed using a Likert scale, while open-ended responses were subjected to thematic analysis. The results revealed significant gaps in knowledge about Patient Blood Management strategies, as a substantial portion of participants reported a lack of knowledge or low confidence in the use of alternative therapies to transfusion. Ethical ambivalence was also observed regarding the patient's right to refuse transfusion in situations of imminent risk, with conditional responses predominating. It is concluded that deficiencies in training and a scarcity of institutional guidelines compromise the adoption of clinical practices aligned with the principles of autonomy, beneficence, and patient safety, highlighting the need for greater investment in professional training and specific hospital policies.
