SLAMMED: An Analysis of Translation of Poetry

Résumé

O presente trabalho visa estudar e analisar a tradução de poesias presentes no livro Slammed, da autora Colleen Hoover, cuja tradução brasileira, feita por Priscila Catão, se chama Métrica. O objetivo desse estudo é explorar as nuances da tradução literária, buscando dar mais visibilidade a este processo importante, porém, muitas vezes, esquecido. Não existe um método específico para tradução de textos literários, como dito pela própria tradutora (vide entrevista em anexo). Portanto, para essa pesquisa, foi utilizado o método de comparação e análise de corpus, um método também sugerido por Rosemary Arroio (2003). Com essa análise, foi possível perceber que a tradutora priorizou o sentido original das palavras, em detrimento das rimas e métricas da poesia. Apesar de essa técnica ter favorecido a interpretação, prejudicou o ritmo de leitura dos slams e, consequentemente, pode ter apresentado uma ideia errônea sobre o que é uma slam poetry.

Abstract

 The present work aims to study and analyze the translation of the poetry present in the book Slammed, by the author Colleen Hoover, whose Brazilian translation, made by Priscila Catão, is called Métrica. The intention of this study is to explore the nuances of literary translation, seeking to give more visibility to this important but often overlooked process. There is no specific method for translating literary texts, as said by the translator herself (see attached interview). Therefore, for this research, the corpus comparison and analysis method was used, a method also suggested by Rosemary Arroio (2003). With this analysis, it was possible to notice that the translator prioritized the original meaning of the words, to the detriment of rhymes and poetry metrics. Although this technique favored interpretation, it affected the pace of slams reading and, consequently, it may have presented an erroneous idea about what slam poetry is.
